Why Bees Matter
Interesting Study of Mason Bees and Honey Bees working together!
Bees are crucial for pollinating fruit trees, and two types of bees—honey bees and mason bees—play a big part in helping fruits grow. Mason bees, known for being great at pollination, can be encouraged to nest in specially-made homes, making them very helpful for farmers. In sweet cherry orchards, mason bees are sometimes used along with, or instead of, honey bees to make sure the trees are well-pollinated. However, without clear advice on how to manage these bees, farmers might not get the best results.
The study also found that many orchards don’t get enough pollen to their flowers, with only 28% of flowers pollinated by insects turning into fruit, compared to 39% of flowers that were hand-pollinated. The best results came when both honey bees and mason bees were present together in the orchards—they helped more flowers turn into fruit than when just one type of bee was present.
The main point is that both honey bees and mason bees are important for pollination, and when they work together, they can really improve the number of fruits produced. By providing good nesting places for mason bees and keeping honey bee hives, farmers can increase the number of bees in their orchards, leading to better pollination and bigger harvests.
It’s important to encourage different types of bees to work together because it helps farmers get the most out of their crops. Farmers should think about using both mason bees and honey bees in their orchards to get the best results and make sure they have a strong, healthy harvest.
